The Tale
I was visiting my friend in Apopka, and we had one afternoon to spend together before I headed back home to St. Louis. She asked me if she had ever taken me to historic Mount Dora. I hadn’t been there, but I had heard a lot about this charming historic town, so off we went!
A Little History About Historic Mount Dora
Mount Dora is situated beside Lake Dora, which has its roots dating back to 1883. Local farmer Dora Ann Drawdy inspired the lake’s name. Lake Dora is a natural lake and forms part of the Harris Chain of Lakes, located northwest of Orlando, which connects seven lakes through canals. Initially, settlers named the town Royellou, but it was officially renamed Mount Dora in 1883.
Mount Dora Historic Downtown District
This small town invites exploration with its historic downtown district, filled with antique shops, specialty stores, a vibrant art scene, and various outdoor activities on the lake.

As we wandered the historic downtown, we couldn’t resist visiting Naples Soap Company. The pleasant fragrances lured us in, tempting us to make a purchase.
We also indulged in ice cream at Scoops on 5th, enjoying locally-made Florida flavors from Sweet Alps Ice Cream. Despite my low-sugar diet, the treat was worth it!
The Lakeside Inn
Next, we made our way to the Lakeside Inn. We lounged on the long front porch, soaking in the lake views. This historic inn, established in 1883, holds the title of Florida’s oldest continuously operating hotel and proudly features a plaque listing it in Historic Hotels of America.

Although we only spent the afternoon in Mount Dora, I hope to return for an overnight stay here at the Lakeside Inn someday. The renovated historic buildings, proximity to numerous shops and restaurants, and, of course, that view!โฆmake it an ideal quick getaway. During our visit, we spotted two weddings taking place, which added to the picturesque scenery.
For dinner, we headed to Tremain’s Tavern, named after Ross Tremain, Mount Dora’s first postmaster from the Royellou days back in 1880. You must try the pot pie; it’s simply very good!

Lake Dora
Lake Dora offers a variety of activities to enjoy. My experience with the lake mainly involved standing or sitting in awe of its beauty and soaking up the calm it provided. However, the area also offers trails, fishing opportunities, parks, and boating activities.
The Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival
Each year, the Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival takes place in the historic downtown, showcasing around 300 artists and attracting over 200,000 visitors to this free event.
Plan Your Visit to Mount Dora
If you end up in the Orlando area, historic Mount Dora lies just 33 miles north. It’s well worth an overnight stay or a leisurely afternoon stroll through town.
