Historic charm, Kimpton style, and the perfect location for exploring Philadelphia’s Old City.

433 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19106

I’m heading to Philadelphia for a conference, and of course, need a hotel. I could take the easy route and stay at the home base hotel near the conference center, but why do that? That is boring. I’d rather be close to the historic Old City while I’m in town. I’ve always liked the Kimpton Hotel brand and have stayed with them since before they joined IHG. Thankfully, IHG has preserved the unique Kimpton vibe with its cocktail-forward approach, each hotel having an individual style—typically reflecting the city it is in—and unmatched hospitality.

When I found the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, a hotel near Independence Hall, that is literally right across the street from one of America’s most famous landmarks, I knew I had to book a room there.

The Hotel

Why This Hotel Near Independence Hall Is the Perfect Location

The location is the real highlight here. For me, it’s the main reason to stay. Being a Kimpton helps too, since you know it’ll be a nice place. Honestly, if it were a regular chain hotel in this spot, that would be a hard no, even if it were across the street from Independence Hall. BUT! This hotel is totally worth it! You can stroll over to all the historic sites in the Old City and have an amazing time at this charming boutique hotel.

The Design

Its design is whimsical and fun, a nod to the world traveler. A chandelier that looks like a sailing ship, Japanese pagoda-inspired ceramics, the sun and moon wardrobes, the compass rose on the floor, and bold gemstone colors. Then there is President George Washington on the curtain medallions, a nod to the founding city of our nation. All Kimptons lean into the local city they reside in. You will see nods to that city throughout the design.

The hotel is in the old LaFayette building, which was built in 1907 as office space. Kimpton is known for reusing historic buildings (like at The Gray in Chicago, or The Cottonwood in Omaha), and in 2011, they started turning this one into a luxury hotel. It opened in 2012, keeping the building’s original architecture while adding modern comforts. Of course, I really appreciate those comforts! And the preservation of the architectural details.

Food and Drink

Wine Happy Hour

Every Kimpton Hotel offers a wine happy hour. Just ask about it when you check in. It’s usually held in the lobby or close by, and there’s always a choice of red or white wine. I’ve never seen them run out, and they never turn anyone away, even at the last minute. Sometimes, they even serve small snacks with the wine, which is a nice bonus.

Stratus Lounge

I always enjoy hotels with rooftops, and this one was beautiful. Don’t expect sweeping skyline views because a wall was added for safety since it’s so close to Independence Hall, but the bar’s design makes up for it. When you enter, you’ll find a covered bar area, with outdoor seating along its length. At each end, there are two separate rooms that can host parties or be rented for special events. Even when it rained during my visit, it was still a great place to unwind after work before heading to my room.

Red Owl Tavern

The Red Owl Tavern is on the main floor, right off the lobby. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and you can try local dishes and local beers on tap.

The Guest Rooms

While the hotel lobby is fun and whimsical, the room is calm and beautiful. After exploring the nearby historic sites, it was wonderful coming back to a hotel near Independence Hall that offered both comfort and style. Velvet blue headboards, pretty flower wallpaper in the bathroom, large, powerful showers, beds you can sink into, windows to take in the view of the park or Independence Hall if you’re lucky.

Kimpton rooms never disappoint. They’re always clean, comfortable, and stylish, but also practical. Outlets and charging stations are easy to reach and work well. There’s plenty of lighting, and the bathroom is nice and bright.

It’s the little touches that make the stay special. There are real glasses instead of plastic cups, a handwritten welcome note on the desk, and high-quality soaps and shampoos. These details really improve the experience.

What Else?

You’ll need to use valet parking since parking is tough to find in the city. Just a heads up—I had to wait 30 minutes for my car after calling for it. That was my only complaint during my stay.

There’s a destination fee on top of your room and valet charges, but that’s standard for hotels in the city.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a hotel near Independence Hall, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia is a great choice. The location is amazing, and the hotel has that unique Kimpton vibe with comfy rooms and nice little touches. It was the ideal spot for diving into Philadelphia’s historic streets after a long day at a conference. Sometimes, the place you stay becomes part of the adventure, and this hotel definitely delivers on that.
