Cozy Holiday Stays: My Top Hotels for a Magical Winter Getaway

Sharing is caring!

Comfy rooms, holiday vibes, and those little local touches that make traveling during the season feel extra special.

Traveling during the holiday season has a unique, special atmosphere, even for me, who’s mostly traveling for work. Between meetings and deadlines, there’s still a sense of excitement. Maybe it’s the twinkle lights of the Christmas trees, the delicious food, the unique pop-up bars. There’s also something special about checking into a cozy, small-town inn when the air starts to get crisp after a long day of work. I really love staying in places with personalityโ€”those quirky hotels, charming B&Bs, and hidden gems that make even a quick trip feel like an adventure. This time of year, I’m always on the hunt for spots that really embrace the holiday spirit, full of warmth, character, and a little extra sparkle. Here are a few of my top picks for holiday-ready stays, perfect for your cozy holiday getaway.

My Favorite Cozy Holiday Stays

A Historic Inn in a Historic Town

Anhuca Historic Mansion and Inn, Vicksburg, MS

Anchuca is the perfect spot for a cozy holiday getaway. The rooms are warm and inviting, making it a great place to relax. The home is rich in history, adding a unique touch to your stay. Vicksburg itself is super charming, with cool museums to check out, cute shops to explore, and delicious food options everywhere. Plus, the locals are really friendly, making your visit feel even more welcoming as you soak in all the town has to offer.

A Hotel Located by the Water, Offering Views of the Gulf

White House Hotel, Biloxi, Mississippi

Experience the enchanting charm of this lovely inn in Biloxi, Mississippi, where spectacular Gulf views are just the beginning! Imagine enjoying your morning coffee or a tasty cocktail on the porch, surrounded by the gentle Gulf breeze and stunning scenery. With a captivating history, the White family originally welcomed northern visitors seeking winter sunshine in the late 1800s. It was Mrs. Cora White who decided to start charging her guestsโ€”after all, it was her home. Thus, a hotel was born. This beautiful retreat offers warmth and coziness, making it the perfect place for your next getaway.

A Cool Hotel in a Christmas-Loving Midwest Town Along the River

The Chandler, Madison, Indiana

In a small town along the Ohio River dating back to 1824, this charming town, Madison, resembles a Hallmark Christmas movie setting. The Chandler, a boutique hotel that opened in 2023, is located in a historic building that was once a livery stable. It offers a comfortable and luxurious atmosphere. The hotel thoughtfully preserves and displays artifacts from its history, with labels explaining their significanceโ€”a nice touch that honors the building’s past.

It’s easy to explore the town, of Madison on foot from the property, and don’t be surprised if you find that everyone at the local coffee shop knows each other. Madison hosts events like a local Home Christmas Tour and Tea with Santa, adding to the town’s festive spirit.

A Small Town Retreat with a Spa, and Award Winning Restaurant

The Alluvian, Greenwood, Mississippi

I know I have three Mississippi hotels listed among my favorite cozy holiday stays, but I must say that Mississippi has the friendliest people in all of America. It makes sense that they know how to be hospitable and have some of the best hotels.

One of my long-time favorites, although I donโ€™t get to visit often, is located in a small town and was originally created as a hotel for Viking (you know, the famous Viking stoves?) This destination is perfect for relaxation. You can take a cooking class at The Viking Cooking School, unwind at The Alluvian Spa, and enjoy a meal at the award-winning Giardina’s Restaurant, where the Old Fashioned cocktail is absolutely to die for! I still remember the smell of my Old Fashioned as I gazed at the Christmas tree.

If you have time, be sure to walk around and shop in the charming local shops. This Mississippi Delta hotel is truly a spot to experience. It was the first hotel I ever stayed in (one of only two) that had doorbells on the guest room doorsโ€”such a charming touch!

A Boutique Hotel Near the Mountains

The Armstrong Hotel, Fort Collins, Colorado

With a youthful vibe, thanks to nearby Colorado State University, the hotel is located in the heart of historic Old Town Fort Collins. This charming, walkable area is filled with shops and restaurants, offering plenty to do. The hotel has a lot of characterโ€”it’s warm, cozy, and unique. I particularly love the wallpaper, the food, and the cocktails. Interestingly, it opened as The Armstrong Hotel in 1923. After several iterations, renovations, and changes in ownership, it became The Armstrong Hotel we know today in 2019.

A Cozy Nature Getaway in the Heart of the Mountains

Alpina Haus, Black Hawk, Colorado

Welcome to the Alpina Haus, a short-term rental in the breathtaking Rocky Mountains! You’ll be captivated by the stunning views and the incredible wildlife that often appears right outside the large windows. It’s the perfect mountain getaway! Just ten minutes away, you can explore the charming town of Black Hawk, and Denver is a convenient hour’s drive for those looking for urban adventures. Plus, Rocky Mountain National Park is only an hour and a half away, offering endless opportunities for outdoor fun.

A Lodge in the Woods by a Lake

Legacy Lodge, Lake Lanier, Buford, Georgia

If you’re looking for a relaxing spot near Atlanta, check out this lodge with amazing views of Lake Lanier at Lanier Islands. When you walk in, you’ll notice the cozy vibe with its wooden beams, stone details, and soft lighting that makes everything feel super relaxing. The outdoor fire pits are perfect for hanging out and warming up, plus they often throw fun holiday events, making it a great place for family getaways. Itโ€™s the perfect mix of laid-back vibes and family-friendly fun, so itโ€™s a top pick for anyone wanting a memorable escape.

A Historic Charming Hotel in a Small City

The Cottonwood Hotel, Omaha, Nebraska

Nestled in the heart of the Blackstone District in Omaha, Nebraska, this hotel was originally built in 1916 as The Blackstone Hotel. After serving as an office building for some time, Kimpton transformed the property, restoring it to its former glory while preserving as much of the historic structure as possible. The Cottonwood Hotel is glamorous, comfortable, and unique. Let’s face it: when decorated with all of the Christmas trees, it is absolutely stunning.

A Beautiful Grand Hotel in the Big City

Beacon Grand, San Francisco, California

Experience a luxurious yet cozy holiday stay in the heart of Union Square at the Beacon Grand Hotel, formerly known as the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. You’ll be in awe the moment you step inside. Be sure to visit the Post Room for a taste of good bourbon accompanied by delicious food. Afterward, head up to your warm and inviting room, featuring custom wallpaper adorned with iconic San Francisco imagery. This hotel offers a unique blend of warmth, comfort, and luxury, making you feel special throughout your stay.

Final Thought

Isnโ€™t it incredible how the holidays can sprinkle a bit of magic on every trip? Whether itโ€™s a charming historic hotel twinkling with Christmas lights or a cozy mountain retreat that offers a moment of tranquility, these experiences truly highlight why I adore traveling this time of year. Itโ€™s the warmth, the captivating stories, the wonderful people, and those little touches that create a sense of home, no matter how far you wander. As you embark on your winter adventures, I genuinely hope you discover a place that envelops you in comfort and wonder, just like these enchanting spots have done for me! Happy travels!
