An Ash hotel

Hotel Peter and Paul is like no other hotel I’ve visited. It is one of the most unique hotels in New Orleans. I stumbled upon it by accident not long after it opened, and it quickly became a favorite spot for me during my trips to Louisiana. If you keep reading, I’ll tell you how I found it, why I took a chance, why I kept going back, and how this hotel led me to stay at their sister property in Baltimore, Ulysses.

The Tale: What Led Me to Hotel peter and Paul, one of the most unique hotels in New Orleans?

While sitting on my back deck some years ago, I was reading one of my travel magazines and came across a small article about the new Hotel Peter and Paul in the Marigny neighborhood in New Orleans. I had already scheduled a work trip for the upcoming month, but after reading about the hotel, I decided to take a chance and booked a stay there instead. It turned out to be a decision I’ll never regret.

I was so pleased with the hotel that it became my go-to place for all my work trips to Louisiana. Its location between my meetings in Biloxi and Baton Rouge was perfect. I started looking forward to these solo trips, exploring the hotel – an old church turned into a hotel, having dinner at the Elysian Bar, and enjoying a cocktail. In the evenings, I’d stroll through the neighborhood, and in the mornings, I’d head to one of the local cafes for breakfast. It indeed became my home away from home.

The HOTEL: what makes this one of the best unique hotels in New Orleans?

It’s one of the most unique hotels in New Orleans because it used to be an old church, school house, rectory, convent, and now a hotel. The oldest building, Sts. Peter and Paul Church was built in 1860. The others were built later, with the school house being the last in 1900. The complex closed in 1993. Ash opened it in late 2018. They took great care to renovate it while preserving and respecting as many original details as possible. You can read more about the renovation process here. The wooden details and the light fixtures all contribute to a calming reverence and reflect a European influence. I always felt a sense of peace whenever I was here, so I kept returning.

The Hotel Peter and Paul website also features stories from people with histories in this church and school. This unique touch—the connection between the hotel and Sts. Peter and Paul, the church, and the community help you respect the company.

The Rooms: talk more about the rooms.

Ash hotel takes pride in combining the old with the new. Their website states that they offer the “best stuff of the old world, made suddenly new.” The rooms feature light wood floors and white walls, allowing local artisan works and antiques to stand out. Each room has its unique design. Even though all the rooms have a similar vibe, each has a special touch. The rooms in the school house, where I always stay, are in the old classrooms.

The most unique room I’ve stayed in was the Grande Loft. It’s a two-level room with a living area and bathroom on the lower level and a bedroom on the upper level loft, which you can access via a spiral staircase. This room alone contributes to Hotel Peter and Paul being one of the most unique hotels in New Orleans.

The Service: What stood out?

The staff was always at the top of their game, very friendly, and helpful. But my favorite aspect was that they started to remember me, or at least knew I was coming and had been somewhat of a regular. On one particular trip, I was greeted with a room upgrade. I found a handwritten thank-you card and some goodies when I entered the room. The little details make a difference and turn an okay stay into a fabulous one.

FOOD and DRINK

The Elysian Bar

I enjoyed the restaurant bar at the hotel, which was a big part of the reason for my frequent returns. The ambiance was like stepping into a fairy tale with its fabric walls, ceiling, garden room, and antique decor, giving off a European vibe. I loved having dinner there, especially with a Boulevardier, or a similar drink in hand. It’s where I had my first Boulevardier. The food was always excellent, creating a soothing environment to unwind before retiring for the night.

Hotel Peter and Paul also offer a cafe and weekend breakfast options. However, since I usually traveled for work and stayed during the week, breakfast wasn’t available. But, I was okay with that! I often explored the walkable neighborhood to visit nearby cafes.

The Bathroom

The bathroom showers in the School House feature hand-painted tiles, with each room having a different color theme – red, green, yellow, and blue. I can’t speak for the bathrooms in the guest rooms in the other buildings. I’ve seen pictures and they look exquisite with limestone tubs and marble showers. One day, I may try one of those rooms!

WHat else?

The hotel does not have valet parking, but it isn’t needed. It has a small parking lot, and I could always find a spot during my stay. There is also street parking available, and the neighborhood is nice. I felt safe there in the evenings and often walked around the neighborhood before dark. It is within walking distance of the French Quarter as well. However, a local client advised me to only walk there during the day, not at night by myself. For the record, I have never walked there at all; I always drive.

Final Thought, about this hotel, one of the most unique hotels in New orleans

It’s been a while since I’ve stayed in a guest room at this lovely hotel. But I’ve been back to visit a couple of times to bring clients to The Elysian Bar for dinner. I know I will be back soon.

I liked this hotel and wanted to find out more about the people behind it. If they had other hotels, I thought I could stay at one of them. I travel for work, so it would be great if they had a hotel in one of the other cities I visit. Finally, I visited the Ulysses in the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood in Baltimore. You can learn more about this hotel by visiting Ulysses, one of the most unique boutique hotels in Baltimore, Maryland.
