Do you ever pick a hotel because you’ve had a great experience at one of their other places?

I do it all the time. I stay somewhere and I love it so much, I look them up to see what other hotels they own or run. If they’re in areas I visit often or in an area for an upcoming trip, if I can make it work, I’ll book a stay there. And I am never disappointed. That is how I ended up at this Delafield hotel.

“Cool. Contemporary. Sophisticated.” This is the slogan on the key card packet I was handed when I checked into this hotel. Along with the slogan on my key is a pencil drawing of a woman’s face: her eyes are closed, chin up, lips tight – edgy. I see a confident woman, perhaps enjoying a favorite song and just living in the moment. That’s the impression I get. She seems to be saying, “Yeah, I got this. Go to hell.” Okay, I think I’m going to like this hotel.

The Back Story

I stumbled upon The Delafield Hotel in Delafield, WI, although I actually looked it up on purpose. I’ve stayed at The Bottleworks Hotel and The Iron Works Hotel in Indianapolis before, and I loved them so much that I did some digging to see if they had any other hotels. And they do! So, I added The Delafield Hotel to my list and made sure to stay there on my upcoming trip to the Milwaukee and Madison area.

I had to go to Madison and Milwaukee for a business conference, so I booked the hotel on the outskirts of Milwaukee for one night, about a 30-minute drive from the airport. It was in a convenient location between the two cities, which worked out well since I was coming from Madison for the day.

What Stood Out Upon My Arrival

The hotel was housed in a Colonial-style brick building that appeared historic but wasn’t truly old. It was nestled away from the main road but still close to town. The lobby was stunning and unique, classy yet not overly formal. There was a trunk-style desk complete with an old-time bell, which of course I couldn’t resist ringing.

I strolled down the hallway and just had to run my fingers along the wallpaper. Its texture was fascinating! I’d love to have it in my own home. The design is so interesting, classy, and sophisticated, yet with unexpected edgy touches, like the artwork in my room. For example, there’s a drawing of a woman belting out a song into a microphone with all her might. I also have a complete bar right by my bedside with cocktail mixes, whiskey, and wine. The room is decorated with velvet pillows and a bold black (or dark blue) and white color scheme. Yes, I totally agree with the slogan, “Cool. Contemporary. Sophisticated.”

The Location

Delafield is a small, historic village located just 25 miles west of Milwaukee and 50 miles east of Madison. The village was established in 1843 and saw the construction of its first hotel in 1850. Unfortunately, I was unable to explore the town fully. I arrived late after a work event in Madison and had to leave first thing in the morning to find the airport. I would have loved to stay longer than my one night to explore the village. It sounds like a charming place.

How was the room?

The room was spacious! It was a really good size with plenty of room to move around and stretch. It was well supplied, (did I mention the cocktail bar? Did I mention I wasn’t able to enjoy it?) The art added a fun touch to the sophistication. The bed was amazing, complete with velvet pillows, and I fell asleep in minutes.

The Bathroom, Was It Fabulous?

The first thing I noticed was a huge bathtub complete with Eucalyptus Bath Salts – score! The shower had great water pressure and was quite roomy. However, I felt that there was a bit of a disconnect between the beautifully designed room and the bathroom. The bathroom still had a vibe from the 2000s, with a lot of tan colors, whereas the room and the hotel itself had white walls, cool wallpaper, and dark floors – no tans. Despite this, the bathroom was spacious and functional.

Food & Drink

The restaurant on site is called I.d. and was once voted the most beautiful restaurant by OpenTable. I’d have to agree. I arrived late, so I wasn’t able to eat (I hear the food is award-worthy as well), but I did take a moment for a cocktail so I could take in that beautiful ceiling. It’s worth at least a peek. I needed a moment to get googly-eyed over that ceiling for sure.

Bottom Line

This Delafield Hotel is definitely worth a visit. Its cool yet sophisticated, classy yet edgy vibe is exactly what I look for in a hotel. It is clean and beautiful but not a cookie-cutter hotel like many business hotels. It has something new and exciting to see (or touch in my case – I had to touch the wallpaper!) It’s definitely a hotel I would visit again. But what would I change on my next visit? I’d SLOOOOW down. Maybe spend the weekend? Have dinner at I.d., not just a cocktail, visit the town, relax on the porch. That is what I would do differently. Maybe sometime soon, I will have to plan that trip too.
