My Favorite Historic Inns in Haunted Vicksburg โ€” Full of Charm, Tales, and Maybe a Ghost or Two

Vicksburg is known as one of the most haunted towns in America, likely due to its rich history and the Siege of Vicksburg, a significant Civil War battle that occurred here. I absolutely love Vicksburg; it’s one of my favorite towns to visit. The people here are the friendliest I’ve met in my travels, and the food is fantasticโ€”tomato pie, fried okra, grits, and fried chicken? Yes, please!

What I appreciate most about this town is the inns. I have stayed in four of them and visited them multiple times. Are they haunted? Some people say they are. I’ve had my own spooky experiencesโ€”one completely freaked me out, while another was just a momentary scare that I realized was simply part of being in a haunted house, so I eventually went back to sleep. In the other inns, I didn’t have any significant experiences. One is relatively new (in Vicksburg terms), while another has a reputation for having one particularly haunted room. I haven’t been brave enough to stay in that room yet, although I have gotten closer.

Here is my list of haunted inns in Vicksburg. I love each one of them and have eaten and stayed at all of them multiple times. I share my experiences not to scare anyone, but to encourage everyone to visit and enjoy these excellent inns in Vicksburg. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the owners at three of the inns, and they are all incredibly gracious and hospitable. There are no inns like these anywhere else in America; they are true historical gems. Each of these inns has its own unique character, charm, and perhaps a few ghosts.

The Inn at Cedar Grove

2200 Oak Street, Vicksburg, MS 39180

The Inn at Cedar Grove, a 1840s mansion that survived the Civil War, is perhaps the most famous inn in Vicksburg. I recall taking a tour and searching for the renowned cannonball embedded in the wall, long before I ever chose to stay there. When I returned to town for work a few years later, I decided to spend the night at the mansion. I wasn’t seeking a ghostly experience; I just wanted a unique place to stay, one that was different from the typical hotel rooms. What I got was indeed unique, but I didn’t sleep at all that night! It felt like I was being watched from the closet next to my bed.

To make matters worse, I had to be up and out by 4 am for my job site. I was completely freaked out. Although I wasn’t looking for an eerie experience, I was genuinely uneasy and managed to catch only a few winks of sleep.

Fast forward roughly 12 years, and with new owners and a renovation complete, I stayed at the mansion again. This time, I felt compelled to communicate with the ghosts. I asked them to let me sleep, saying, “Please just let me sleep.” It may sound insane, but I felt the need to let those spirits know I understood their presence and needed a peaceful night. And they listened! I slept wonderfully. It was a fantastic experienceโ€”so unique and beautiful. The porches, gardens, and river views were amazing, and the history of the place was enchanting.

The Duff Green Mansion

1114 Furst East Street, Vicksburg, MS 39183

I arrived late and let myself in using the code they provided for the lock, which I liked, so I wasn’t bothering the innkeeper by coming in late. I headed to my room, located on the lower level. Feeling a little nervous about staying in a “haunted room,” I chose to play it safe and opted for a room that is not known to be haunted (The Camellia Room), although it turns out I may have been wrong about that.

I fell fast asleep, but suddenly woke up! I saw a soldier at the end of my four-poster bed, reaching for my ankle as if he were emerging from below. I only see him from the waist up. Startled, I sat straight up in bed and looked at him for what felt like a few seconds. Then it hit me: I was in a haunted inn! Oh yes, that’s right. I quickly came to terms with it and went back to sleep, undisturbed for the rest of the night. I slept wonderfully.

This tale is true. It really happened to me. It was October, and I had not stayed in this house before. I knew a little about it, but not much. The next morning, after a brief tour, I learned that the Duff Green Mansion had served as a hospital during the Civil War for both the Confederates and the Union. I also discovered that the yard just outside my room’s window was a graveyardโ€”a graveyard for those soldiers. Now everything is starting to make sense.

I stayed a second night on this trip in the same room, and thankfully, no spirits decided to join me. I truly loved my stay here, and this experience felt like a significant step forward for me. It was the first time I wasn’t completely freaked out. Once I came to terms with it, I fell back asleep right away and can now happily share the tale. Next time, I think I’ll try a room on a higher floorโ€”maybe one of the known haunted rooms.

Anchuca Historic Mansion and Inn

1010 First East Street, Vicksburg, MS 39183

If you’re looking for a subtle ghostly experience, consider visiting Anuchuca! This pre-Civil War mansion, built in the 1830s, was reportedly used as a field hospital during the Siege of Vicksburg and is said to be haunted by several spirits. One of these spirits is Archie Archer, the teenage daughter of the property’s owner from 1937, who is often seen in the parlor near the fireplace. Another ghost is believed to haunt the servants quarters, where visitors can feel the presence of a soldier.

The Davis Room, which was once the bedroom of its former owner, Joseph Davis, the brother of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy during the Civil War, is said to be imbued with his presence. Visitors often report hearing footsteps and experiencing the sensation of being watched.

I haven’t been brave enough to stay in the Davis Room. During my first visit, I chose to stay in the Old Quarter King Room, which was once the servants’ quarters behind the house. I thought I was playing it safe, but little did I know that this room is said to have a “presence” lurking around. Surprisingly, I slept wonderfully despite that!

During my next visit, I mustered up some courage and decided to stay in the main house, specifically in Eliza’s Room. This room has a connecting door to the Davis Room, which made me feel much closer to everything. Aside from a few strange feelings that I probably created for myself, I had a wonderful time staying in this room.

Oak Hall Bed & Breakfast

2430 Drummond Street, Vicksburg, MS 39180

Oak Hall doesn’t claim to be haunted, and I’ve only had one experience there that made me question that. I absolutely love staying at Oak Hall. It’s peaceful, a bit more modern than the other inns in town, and let’s face it, they have a fabulous front porch perfect for sipping wine and working in the evenings if I want to. Unlike some other inns, I’ve never felt “weird” or sensed a presence, nor have I been awakened in the middle of the night by a ghostly soldier grabbing my ankle or a girl peering at me from the closet, as I have experienced at two other inns in town. So why is it on my list? Well, it is located in a very “haunted” town, and here is my tale.

On my first visit, during my last evening, I awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of a baby crying. It kept me awake longer than I would have liked, but I attributed it to the family that was arriving after hours in the family suite above my room. I figured they must have a baby with them, so I eventually fell back asleep.

The next morning at breakfast, I was surprised to see that the family at the table had kids who were way past the baby stage. I couldn’t help but ask the inn owner if she knew about any ghosts in the house. She said she didn’t know of any. I told her about my experience, and we wondered if maybe it could have been a cat. Who knows? I really thought it was a baby. But isn’t that part of the fun? That’s why I added this inn to my list. Plus, it’s in Vicksburg, after all!
