Anchuca Historic Mansion and Inn, a Historic Antebellum Bed and Breakfast In Vicksburg
As you may already know, Vicksburg has many antebellum homes converted into inns, each with a rich history. Many of these homes survived the Civil War. One notable property that deserves special mention is the Anchuca Historic Mansion and Inn, an antebellum bed and breakfast.

A Bit About the Mansion
Jefferson Davis’s brother, Joseph Davis, once owned this property. Jefferson Davis visited it and even delivered a speech from the balcony in 1869. During my first visit, I stood on that balcony, imagining the significant history and events that had taken place there—the people and the era. It truly transported me back in time. However, the balcony is now locked, likely for safety reasons.

Anchuca, constructed in the 1830s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the Choctaw language, it translates to “happy home.”
My Story with Anchuca
Many years ago, I visited Anchuca and had lunch at their restaurant with some clients. Lori and I briefly stepped away from the group so she could give me a tour. We quietly explored, peeking into rooms with open doors blocked by ropes. “You need to stay here next time you visit,” she said, which intrigued me. I was excited to book a stay at this beautiful historical inn during my next visit.
- Old Quarters King, in the servants quarters
- Davis Room in the main house
- Wilson Room in the main house
I finally made that happen. After hearing its haunting stories, I chose to stay in the original servants’ quarters behind the main house. I avoided the main house because I was wary of ghostly encounters and thought I might avoid them if I stayed elsewhere. I’m still determining how logical that reasoning was, but I had no issues. I slept incredibly well that night.
Check-in
I stayed a second time, and the new owners had updated and refreshed the home. They were delightful. When I arrived in Jackson, the rental car company didn’t have the car I had reserved—actually, no rental car company had any cars available then! The owner graciously offered to call someone to pick me up, even though they were an hour away and it was nighttime. However, I decided to take an Uber, as I didn’t want to inconvenience her. When I arrived, the owner greeted me with a smile.

- Davis Room
- A coffee cup in a guest room
During this visit, I stayed in the main house in Eliza’s Room, next to the Davis Room. I still wasn’t quite ready to stay in the Davis Room! Once again, my stay was pleasant, and I wasn’t bothered by any ghosts. The room was comfortable, and I enjoyed a great view of the pool.

Anchuca offers a fabulous breakfast, and the food is outstanding overall. Vicksburg is genuinely a food lover’s paradise. Not only was the breakfast delicious, but it was also beautiful. If you stay after breakfast, you can enjoy a tour and learn about the history of this antebellum bed and breakfast.
What else?
- The patio
- The back entrance near the patio
- Bev on the front porch
The patio was beautiful and peaceful. During my first visit, I enjoyed coffee there in the morning. On my second trip, I ordered an Old Fashioned in the evening, and I sat with my laptop to work. The front porch is also excellent for lounging, having a cocktail, and enjoying the nice weather.
The home is within walking distance of Washington Street, where you can find restaurants, shops, museums, and the riverfront.
final thought
Choosing just one for a stay can be challenging with numerous antebellum bed and breakfasts in Vicksburg. Each inn I’ve visited offers a unique experience, and they are all enjoyable in their own way. I plan to continue rotating between them, as I return to Vicksburg regularly.
