If you’re looking for a haunted inn in Vicksburg and a place to spend the night with a story and history, there isn’t a better-known inn than this one. The Inn at Cedar Grove withstood the Civil War and many tragedies. Continue reading to hear more about this haunted Inn.

A bit about the mansion

Built in 1840 and completed in 1852 by John Klein, he and his bride Elizabeth lived in the home until he died in 1884. Elizabeth continued to live in the house until 1909. In 1863, the home endured the Siege of Vicksburg, even being hit by cannon fire, which you can still see remnants from today.

The history

Some tragedies that happened here at The Inn at Cedar Grove contribute to the tales of ghosts and mystery at the home. For instance, Willie, a teenage son of the Kleins, was accidentally shot in the woods in the back. A worker at the property told me the story was he was trying to make it up the back stairs to his mother when he died.

The house also served as a military hospital during the Civil War under the leadership of William T. Sherman, a cousin to Elizabeth Klein. I’ve heard stories that the Kleins had an advantage of leaving Vicksburg before the siege because they were cousins, and he tipped Elizabeth off to the siege. Whether that is true or not is unknown, but it makes sense.

My experience

I wasn’t looking to stay at a haunted inn during my first visit. I was looking for something different, and a historic inn seemed the perfect fit. But I didn’t sleep a wink that night. I felt a presence, like someone was watching me all night from the dark closet next to my bed.

Years later, I visited again with new owners and a refreshed look. This time, I asked the ghosts to leave me be and let me sleep. And they did! I slept like a baby.

the stories

They say Mr. Klein hangs out in his smoking parlor, and you can sometimes catch a whiff of his pipe smoke. Some people claim Mrs. Klein roams the main level, while a little girl is said to be haunting one of the upstairs bedrooms. I can’t help but wonder if she was the one keeping an eye on me during my first stay. Plus, there are also sightings of Civil War soldiers wandering around the mansion.

Would You stay here?

The Inn is a special place, and I will return to it. Since my last visit, the owners have made even more updates, including adding a restaurant, The Chandelier Bar & Lounge. Have breakfast and stay for the tour.

Do not let the haunted tales stop you from experiencing this fantastic home and Inn. The Inn at Cedar Grove may be a haunted inn, but it is a beautiful home full of history. While you’re in town, head to the McRaven House for a tour. It holds the claim as the most haunted house in Mississippi!
