Looking for a haunted bed and breakfast to stay when visiting Vicksburg? There are several to choose from! The Duff Green Mansion is one of those haunted bed and breakfasts. They embrace their ghosts and encourage you to visit despite them. Keep reading and you’ll learn a little about this historic home, its significance in the Civil War, and why I enjoyed my stay at the Duff Green Mansion.

A bit about the Mansion

Duff Green Mansion is part of the Duff Green Family of Boutique Hotels. I’ve only stayed at the mansion; I haven’t stayed at their other properties. The National Register of Historic Places lists the bed and breakfast.

It is a historical mansion that survived the Civil War but not without some damage. Duff Green, the homeowner, declared his home a hospital after its fifth cannonball hit. He was trying to stay neutral in the war, a businessman trying not to pick a side but sympathetic to the Confederates; he opened the hospital to both the Union and Confederate sides. Jefferson Davis and Ulysses S. Grant visited his home.

Staying in a home like this is like going back in time. Knowing of its reputation for haunting, it intrigued me. I also wanted to try just one more of the beautiful historic homes turned inns in Vicksburg. There are several, and they all give a slightly different experience. But the history of the homes are alluring.

Arrival

Check-in was a breeze. I chose the Camellia Room on the bottom floor in front, near parking. I received a code to the lockbox earlier that day to retrieve my key to the entry door and to my room when I arrived after hours.

My ghostly encounter

I was all settled and cozily sleeping when I awoke in the middle of the night to a man or soldier at the end of my bed grabbing my ankle and startling me. I sat straight up and looked at him. Then it dawned on me where I was, and “Oh, yeah, I’m in a haunted house.” I laid back down and went to sleep, and the soldier vanished. The following day, I discovered the burial ground outside my window. I didn’t have any idea of that when I arrived. I learned of it during the tour that next morning.

The bed and the breakfast

The home is beautifully decorated, and the bed is comfortable. I needed a step stool to get to it, which was fun!

The breakfast is fantastic. DO NOT MISS IT! Of course, the food anywhere in Vicksburg is impressive, but the Duff Green Mansion goes above and beyond to serve you at a gorgeously made table in the dining room. Plus, you never know who you will meet. At my table, I met two couples from Biloxi and a couple from Norway driving the Mississippi Blues Trail.

Take the tour

Take the tour in the morning. Learn about the history of Duff Green, his family, the Civil War this house experienced, and the tales. History fascinates me, and it is worth hanging around and hearing both the historical and ghostly tales. A haunted bed and breakfast may be the experience you are looking for!
