Oak Hall, One of my Favorite Hotels In Vicksburg

A charming boutique hotel in Vicksburg that really sets itself apart from the rest!

I added Oak Hall to my list of favorite hotels in 2024, which makes it one of my favorite hotels in Vicksburg, but I haven’t had a chance to share why I love it so much. I’ve already written about three other inns in Vicksburg. The other three have creepy ghost stories, which is how I got started on them, talking about the hotels and inns with tales of ghosts. Oak Hall doesn’t have that vibe. With that said, on my second morning, I could’ve sworn I heard a baby crying. At first, I thought it was the new family in the suite above me, but when I chatted with everyone at breakfast, I found out their kids were definitely past the baby stage. So, the ghost thing may still be undetermined. However, please continue to read to understand why it is one of my favorite hotels in Vicksburg (and of all my stays in 2024) and why it is so much different than the other bed and breakfasts in Vicksburg.

The Inn

Oak Hall stands apart from the other hotels in Vicksburg. While the others originate from the same era and carry Civil War stories with ornate designs, Oak Hall is a more modern establishment built in 1910, after the Civil War. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has its own unique history, though unrelated to the Civil War.

The design of Oak Hall is notably different as well. It features plenty of hardwood features throughout, showcasing a Mission Revival style depicted by stained glass, a spacious stairwell, hardwood floors, and original light fixtures. Unlike the other inns, filled with ornate antiques, Oak Hall presents a cleaner and more contemporary atmosphere, offering a distinct feel.

My Arrival

I arrived at Oak Hall a bit early and parked near the house in the driveway. I did not know which door to use, so I picked the side door since it was the closest. Once inside, it was quiet, so I walked lightly down the wooden hallway. An older lady, who seemed sweet, came out carrying some dishes and started setting them on the dining table. She said she was helping her daughter with the annual deep clean and that she was visiting from out of town. Her daughter owned the bed and breakfast.

After greeting “Mom” and the owner, I found my room and discovered a lovely note welcoming me on the bed. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve received a note like this upon arrival, and it is a nice touch that always starts my experience on a positive note.

My Room

My room was modern with a touch of nostalgia—clean and refreshing, rather than elaborate as you might imagine in a Civil War-era inn. I appreciated having my own individually controlled thermostat; it’s great to have modern amenities in an old house like this! The bathroom featured a new shower with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion.

There were fluffy towels and an abundance of hot water. The owners made a significant effort to ensure this old house had all the conveniences of a new one, so you won’t have to worry about issues like low water pressure or cold rooms that can be common in older hotels in Vicksburg.

Oh, I cannot forget the bed! Seriously, beds and bedding are super important, and they have to be decent. When I find an excellent bed, I must mention it because many just don’t cut it. This one was amazing, and I slept like a baby.

My Experience

Each evening, I relaxed on the front porch with my laptop on my lap and a glass of wine from the shared guest fridge. Occasionally, the owner’s mother would come out and join me, and one night, the owner did, too. Slim Jim, the inn’s family dog, would happily greet me as I went from the fridge to the porch. It was a truly relaxing and personal experience.

What Else?

You’ll find working Wi-Fi, which is excellent for those like me who catch up on emails on the front porch each night. Parking is available on-site within the grounds of the home. You receive a complimentary homemade breakfast every morning. The bed and breakfast features a shared butler’s pantry where you can grab a snack or a glass of wine or store your items if needed. Additionally, there’s a mini fridge in your room.

Vicksburg is a charming small town with a rich history. Its vibrant downtown area features shops, restaurants, a scenic riverwalk, and casinos. Additionally, the Vicksburg National Military Park offers a glimpse into the past. The locals are warm and inviting, making it easy to fit in and start conversations with your neighbors at the table next to you during dinner. They even recognize your face if you visit often; I visited one establishment so often in one year that they got to know me! Vicksburg is one of my favorite places to visit in the country.

Visit this charming historic town and find Oak Hall, your home during your stay. It is truly one of my favorite hotels in Vicksburg!
