Things to do in Omaha

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been traveling to Omaha for work for many years now. Each time, I discover new places to see or visit. Sometimes I revisit the places I adore. Omaha is the perfect mix of city and country. I can easily transition from the city to farm fields and small towns in less than 10 minutes. That’s what I love about Omaha. Here’s my list of things to do in Omaha, from where to eat, what to visit, and where to stay, ones I’ve found and many that I love to return to again and again.

things to do

Omaha’s got one amazing zoo – the Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium! Whether you’ve got little ones in tow or you’re just craving some animal charm, this place is a must-see. Personally, I couldn’t get enough of the giraffes!

George and Sarah Joslyn moved to Omaha from Vermont and began their journey in the printing business before eventually becoming the owners of the Western Newspaper Union. After making Omaha their home, Sarah donated a memorial to her late husband, George, which now stands as the Joslyn Art Museum. While the Joselyn Castle & Gardens grounds and gardens are always open for everyone to enjoy, the museum home is only open for tours during limited hours.

The Lewis & Clark Landing and Park is a beautiful spot with a prairie garden and plenty of green space. It’s right by the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, which you can walk across to Iowa. I love stopping by the visitor center and chilling by the river before heading back to the airport.

Another awesome place is the Old Market, a super charming historic neighborhood in Omaha. You can eat, drink, shop, and enjoy some great entertainment there. The cobblestone streets and variety of attractions make it a fun place to explore.

I absolutely love the Durham Museum! It’s my favorite because it’s housed in the old Union Station and really brings the history of the area to life. Additionally, the art deco architecture of the old Union Station is absolutely stunning. Make sure to take some time to visit each one of the bronze statues in the hall – they represent the people who used this train station over the years, and guess what? They talk and share their stories! Don’t forget to explore the train cars on display, including a Pullman car. It’s such a cool experience!

The General Crook House Museum in Fort Omaha used to be an Army Depot. It’s a cool spot to learn about General Crook and his connection with the Ponca tribe. A significant moment in history happened with the trial of Chief Standing Bear v. Crook, where Chief Standing Bear took the federal government to court over human rights and actually won. General Crook was a big supporter for him during that trial. The house was built in 1879 by Crook himself, and it’s even had some famous visitors, like Ulysses S. Grant and his wife.

If you’re up for a car ride to Ashland, NE, you should definitely check out the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. It’s totally worth the trip, especially because there’s a massive Blackbird on display right when you walk into the museum.

There are many casinos just a short drive across the river in Council Bluffs, Iowa if that is your thing. I prefer Ameristar Casino and Hotel, so if you feel like gambling, head over and check it out.

Where to eat

I just discovered the most amazing breakfast spot, Saddle Creek Breakfast Club, on my last trip. It’s a small but super popular place, so be prepared to wait for a table. The breakfast they serve is not your typical fare, and I promise you’ll be blown away by how good it is.

If you’re in the mood for cocktails, definitely check out The Green Room. It’s a fantastic spot where the bartender will whip up a custom cocktail just for you! And if it’s not your cup of tea, no worries, they’ll make you something else. Trust me, it’s going to be delicious. Another favorite of mine is the Takeoff Rooftop Bar on top of The Peregrine Hotel. The views of Omaha are amazing – it’s definitely a place I love to visit over and over again!

For lunch, I have stopped by Upstream Brewing Company in the famous Old Market neighborhood. They offer delicious brews and yummy food.

I’m a big fan of steak, especially in Nebraska where beef is a huge deal, so you may want to check out some of these great restaurants. For a more laid-back vibe, you should definitely check out Jackson Street Tavern. They have a full cocktail menu, great bourbon, and amazing steaks. Another cool spot is Wilson and Washburn, with its cozy, pub feel and focus on fresh, homemade food. I’ve had such a great time there, enjoying fantastic cocktails and delicious wines. And for a fancy dining experience, you can’t go wrong with 801 Chophouse and their mouthwatering Wagyu beef finished off with a rich port wine.

Oh, and let’s not forget about dessert! Make sure to treat yourself to some homemade ice cream at Ted & Wally’s. They use local ingredients and their shop is located in a charming old filling station in Old Market. It’s so good!

where to stay

I highly recommend checking out three amazing hotels in Omaha. The first one, Hotel Deco, has stunning art deco design in the lobby and rooms. It’s in a great location near The Old Market, where you can find plenty of restaurants and shops. For a more relaxed vibe, the beautiful Magnolia Hotel with its courtyard will make you feel like you’re in a palace in Italy. Last but not least, you’ll love the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel with its all-inclusive experience in the Blackstone District. It is absolutely one of my favorite hotels, not only in Omaha, but also among all the hotels I’ve stayed at. Whether you’re in Omaha for business or pleasure, these hotels are full of character and charm.

Bottom line

Omaha is a fabulous city to visit with lots of fun things to do and see.
