The Tale

I love discovering hotels with character and a rich history. So when I stumbled upon this gem, I couldn’t resist booking a stay! This haunted LA hotel exudes a delightful old glamour charm. Plus, intriguing rumors circulate about it being hauntedโ€”how exciting is that?! Deciding to stay here was a no-brainer!

The Hotel: Over One Hundred Years of Tales at a Haunted LA Hotel

The Biltmore Los Angeles has been welcoming guests and hosting stars and presidents for over a hundred years. Located in downtown Los Angeles, the hotel opened in 1923. The 1920s saw it quickly become the place to be seen.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the Biltmore began hosting the Academy Awards, with famous stars like Walt Disney, Jimmy Stewart, and Judy Garland walking its halls.

As a member of the Historic Hotels of America, the Biltmore Los Angeles is noteworthy for its stunning architecture. Be sure to look up at the beautiful frescoes. They designed them after those found in Italy. Also, notice the intricate architectural details that can be overwhelming to take in.

The Biltmore has been featured in countless movies, television shows, and music videos. While it’s impossible to list them all, a few of my favorites include “Mad Men,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Oppenheimer.” As you walk through the guestroom halls, take your time. Admire the photographs of various stars who have been on set at this iconic hotel.

The Hauntings: Tales from This Haunted LA Hotel

In the 1940s, actress Elizabeth Short, famously known as the Black Dahlia, was last seen in the hotel lobby, making phone calls. She waited in the lobby for a while, and then a doorman held the door for her as she exited. After that, she disappeared. Elizabeth was later found gruesomely murdered, and her case was never solved. The story of the Black Dahlia continues to haunt today. Some still claim that her spirit lingers in the lobby where she was last seen.

Other ghostly tales feature a little boy on the 10th floor, a nurse on the 2nd floor, a young girl on the 9th floor, and a faceless boy on the hotel roof.

Some people report waking up to a presence hovering over them, while others hear voices coming from empty rooms. There are also accounts of bartenders seen in the distance, only to vanish moments later. As for my experience, I am thrilled by the history, the footsteps of those who walked these halls before, and the beauty. Despite the thrilling, haunting stories, I was left undisturbed.

My Stay

I didn’t see any ghosts, but I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this historic hotel. You can feel the energy in every corner. The stories that these halls and rooms could tell are fascinating. I looked at photographs from the Oscars, and imagined the grand parties that took place. I moseyed around the hotel, discovered the Crystal Ballroom and the Gallery Bar. Stopping at the Gallery bar, I enjoyed an Old Fashioned as a nod to the rich history this grand dame has to share. After that, I headed off to bed and slept wonderfully.

Final Thought

Whether you come for the history, the architecture, or the thrill of staying at a haunted LA hotel, The Biltmore Los Angeles is a destination that captures the imagination. Itโ€™s one of those rare places where the past still feels present. Present in the details, the stories, and maybe even the echoes in the hallways. Haunted or not, this grand old hotel is absolutely worth a stay for anyone who loves vintage glamour and a touch of mystery.
