About The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge

This pedestrian bridge, officially named the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, spans 3,000 feet across the Missouri River, linking Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Bob is the first pedestrian bridge to span two states! It was a joint project between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska, officially opening in September 2008.

The bridge connects to many walking and biking trails, with parks located on either side in each state.

The Tale

I’ve been to this pedestrian bridge more times than I can count, just hanging out under it on the Omaha side by the water for a chill moment. But this time was different. I decided to walk all the way across instead of just going halfway and turning back. I needed the steps, it was a gorgeous day, and honestly, I was curious about what was on the other side!

The other Side

I came across this sculpture called “Looking Up” by Tom Friedman at the River’s Edge Pavilion in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Oddly, he was familiar to me. We have a similar sculpture in St. Louis. Additionally, I learned that Tom Friedman was born in St. Louis (my hometown!)

Two states in just 3,000 feet.

If you find yourself in Omaha or Council Bluffs on a pleasant day and are looking for something to do, experiencing this pedestrian bridge is a great way to spend the day.
