Mississippi Road Trip From St. Louis
BBQ, Boutique Hotels, and Southern Charm
This Mississippi road trip from St. Louis is full of Mouthwatering food, Fascinating History, and memorable places to stay, from Memphis Ribs to Delta Rooftops.
A road trip feels different when you head south. Maybe it’s the slower pace (Yes!!!), maybe it’s the food (okay—it’s definitely the food), or maybe it’s how every stop has its own story. This Mississippi road trip from St. Louis had all of that and even more.
Day 1: St. Louis to Memphis
a must-stop for BBQ
We started things off from St. Louis and made our way down to Memphis—because no Delta road trip should EVER skip Memphis. Absolutely! It’s located in Tennessee, and you’ll encounter it on your journey from St. Louis to Mississippi. Don’t miss out on this essential stop!
First stop? Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous. Heard of it? If you know, you know. The dry-rub ribs here are legendary, and the atmosphere feels like you’ve stepped into a place that hasn’t changed in FOREVER!

From there, we headed south to Greenwood for the night—and mainly, it’s because I was set on staying at one of my favorite hotels again. We checked into The Alluvian Hotel, a boutique hotel with serious style (and ties to the Viking Range brand—so yes, food matters here too).
It’s elegant without being stuffy, and the experience feels curated in a way you don’t always expect in a small Delta town.
- Lobby of The Alluvian
- An Old Fashioined at Giardina’s
- A guest room at The Alluvian
If you’re not too tired, grab a drink or light bite (or a full meal if you skipped BBQ in Memphis) at Giardina’s. It’s part of the experience. They make a killer Old Fashioned. And I can assure you that the food is excellent!

Day 2: Greenwood to Vicksburg
History, River Views, and Southern Cooking (Yum!)
The next morning, we drove to Vicksburg, a town that mixes history, riverfront views, and good old southern hospitality in a way you remember. I swear, the nicest people in the country live here.
We enjoyed a charming lunch at Walnut Hills Restaurant! It is the epitome of Southern comfort food—classic and satisfying. Definitely a must-visit when planning your day!

After lunch, you’ve got options depending on your mood:
- Walk along the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals and take in the Mississippi River views.
- Step into history at Vicksburg National Military Park. It may take more time.
- Tour one of the town’s historic homes, like Anchuca Mansion, or a haunted one like McRaven House, if you’re interested in a historical haunted tour.
No matter what you choose, this part of the trip slows you down in the best way.

If you want to take it even slower and add another day to your weekend trip, stay here in Vicksburg. There are many historic places to choose from, such as Anchuca Mansion & Inn, The Inn at Cedar Grove, Oak Hall Bed & Breakfast, or Duff Green Mansion Bed & Breakfast.

Day 3: The Delta Drive: Greenville to Cleveland
This leg of the Mississippi Delta road trip back to St. Louis highlights the region’s vibrant and distinct charm!
First stop: Greenville.
We headed straight to Doe’s Eat Place, and it really lives up to its reputation. With steaks, tamales, and a simple atmosphere (you walk into the kitchen!) It’s a place you remember long after your trip. You might be surprised to hear that some famous folks have been known to stop by here! Don’t let the small, simple exterior throw you off—this place serves up some seriously amazing food!
From there, we continued on to Cleveland, which has a surprisingly fun and refined vibe. This town is called a “top southern small town” on its website, and I totally get it after my quick visit. They have the only Grammy Museum outside of Los Angeles! I actually visited the one in LA. But this one in Cleveland, well, it just didn’t fit into my schedule this time. But next time? I’m definitely checking it out!
- The Cotton House Hotel, Cleveland, Mississippi
- The Fontaine rooftop bar
- A view of downtown Cleveland, Mississippi from The Fontaine
We stopped at Bar Fontaine, the rooftop bar at Cotton House Hotel, for cocktails and a bite. Honestly, it was one of those times when you’re surprised to find something so cool here. The views were stunning, the cocktail provided a needed break, and the conversation with the locals was priceless.
If you’re ready to call it a day, this is a great place to stay the night.
Final Stop: Memphis, A Classic Ending
We looped back to Memphis for one last night and stayed at The Peabody Memphis.
- Lobby of The Peabody Hotel
- A cocktail at The Peabody Hotel
- A guest room
Even if you’ve been before, it never gets old. The lobby, the history, and the cocktails all add to the experience. If you’re lucky with timing, you can also catch the famous duck march, which is just as charming as it sounds.

Come hungry, take your time, and you might find yourself planning your next Delta trip before this one is even over.
